What flies to use for fishing in Iceland - Tube flies
So now for the Atlantic salmon fishing in Iceland. Well not exclusively salmon fishing as these tube flies work equally well for sea trout fishing in Iceland, especially the Sun Ray Shadow.
Most Icelandic salmon rivers are not that big so fishing tube flies should never be your first option unless you are faced with a high water situation. Well let me refraze - I personally prefer not to start with a tube fly when I am salmon fishing in Iceland. Dropping a "bomb" like some of these tube flies can do more damage than good especially in low water situations and/or when fishing small pools. I always prefer to start either with a hitch or a very small double or treble fly (usually I prefer doubles).
When I've been unsuccessful with smaller flies I'll end with going through the pool with a tube fly or a Sun Ray Shadow. I'll also sometimes use the Sun Ray to search for fish if fishing a river I've never been to before or simply when fishing early in the spring and I'm not sure yet where the fish are sitting (or if they are there yet or not). The Sun Ray will almost always invoke some kind of a reaction, especially with fresh fish. That helps with locating and pin pointing a fish that you can then target with a smaller fly.
Below is a list of all the tube flies you need really - the more you bring the bigger the headache of choosing a fly. However we will be adding to this list in the future.
