Another nice salmon caught early season on Huseyjarkvisl River

Óli our guide with a fish of his own. Yeah you might think all Oli does is guide but sometimes he does fish himself - and then he catches a fish like that.
That's Valli - the river manager with a grilse caught in the Gullhylur (Golden pool). That pool is so much fun to fish for several reasons.

Massive sea trout that has been in the river for a while. Caught in September 2008 in Laxhylur (e. the perfect pool).
This nice brown trout hammered the Sun Ray Shadow in the Klapparhylur (e. Cliff face) pool.
Fish on in Perfect pool. This fish was not officially landed. I broke my rod playing it, the fish went on a surging run and broke off.
Laxhylur - Perfect pool. One can lose track of time there with fish jumping all over the run. Perfect for hitching.
Early July on Huseyjarkvisl. That's what you get at that time - fresh big hen fish.

Fantastic fresh salmon caught during the opening days of the salmon beats in Huseyjarkvisl in....2009 rather than 2010. Fish caught in the Golden pool.
That fish was caught in Réttarhylur pool. One of my favorites. It's a long pool that can hold fish all over the place - both sea trout and salmon. Oh yeah and brown trout as well. Not the easiest pool to fish in sunshine and no wind.
Fish on in Golden pool. There you see one of the reasons why it's so much fun to fish. Very hard to land a fish there without someone helping out with a net.
That is a late season cock fish. Those bad boys usually get caught late in the season when they get territorial. Fish caught in Laxhylur (Perfect pool).

Playing a brown trout in Rettarhylur pool. We were after salmon but saw these big browns rising so put a shuttlecock on a 12 pound salmon leader. First cast the fish nailed the fly.

Spanish angler with another grilse from Toggi pool. That year (2009) we had strong grilse runs all over the north-west of Iceland. In 2011 hardly any grilse ran the rivers so we had fewer but bigger fish.

Spanish angler fighting a brown trout under the "new" bridge on Huseyjarkvisl. We'd been casting to a salmon we saw there but could not ignore that big brown trout that kept rising. Dry fly on and Bamm!! Fish on!!

Valli the manager with a 97 cm salmon caught on the Perfect pool
An angler fishing the Golden pool. Do you notice the underwater gorge? That's where the salmon all sit. You have a hard back cast so you have to roll cast and they come up from the deep to hammer your fly. Super fun.

The Reykjafoss waterfall. Fish can't travel further than that so here is a nice spot to fish. Not usually a holding pool and not super fun to fish with a fly but can be fun to hitch there. Don't spend alot of time there. Above the waterfall starts the Svarta trout river.
The fantastic scenery on Huseyjarkvisl. You are fishing in a valley surrounded by beautiful mountains and the sunset there is amasing.
Hitching the Klapparhylur pool. Notice the high stick? That's the angler creating friction on the hitch to make it ride high and come up to the surface. He is fishing the rock at the end of the run where fish very often hold.

Playing a fish in Golden pool. There the fish must have taken at the top of the run in the fast water. If a fish is there I'd say 99% of the time it takes the fly. Theory is the fish has moved up to the fast water getting ready to move on and is more likely to take. I love fishing theories.
Nice view of the Golden pool. The run starts at the top where you see the fast water and fish can sit all the way down and even further down than the cameraman is standing. Where the angler is fishing is the hot spot where fish hold all season long and at the end of the season is full of fish, salmon, sea trout and brown trout alike.
The Toggi pool. Photo taken upstream showing the deep run by the bank. Fish sit from the bend and all the way down to the shallows, usually tucked up against the bank. Great pool for hitching.
September 22. 2010. Fished two rods and started on the salmon beats. Caught two brown trout and this salmon during the first 6 hour session. Story continues with next photos.
The next morning - September 23. - it was -3 degr. celsius and so we decided to try the sea trout fishing instead. This photo was taken at the junction pool (15) and clearly shows how cold it was.

We caught 2-3 smaller fish in the junction pool but when we fished a little lower we found this one. Nice fresh sea trout and it was not to be the only one.
Probably the same fish but a nice fish anyway. We caught so many from that spot I'm not sure if it is the same one or not.

Despite the cold temps the weather was fantastic.
As the temperature grew we moved back up to the salmon beats just before lunch time and managed to catch one more salmon.

With that second salmon landed we figured we were having alot more fun targeting fresh, silvery sea trout rather than stale salmon so we decided to stay on the trout beats for the rest of the trip
As soon as we got back to the trout beats we were back into those fresh run sea trout.
OK this one was not totally fresh - let's say "fresh-ish"
It took off like a rocket though... Even if it was only "fresh-ish"

Huseyjarkvisl is a catch & release river which is super important and a huge factor in the success it has.
My fishing buddy caught another sea trout. Like I said before - it was non-stop action!
OK I take it back that all the fish were fresh. This one had been in the river for a while but look at the girth on that fish. If I remember correctly that fish was 75 cm long. Can't remember the girth.
Same fish as on the picture before. Man! those fish fight hard!
On the first cast after I released the 75 cm fish this one took and I managed to land it (as you can see). It measured 77 cm with 46 cm girth. Shortly after I hooked another big one from the same exact spot but lost it.

One of the smaller sea trout we caught - yeah we did also catch small sea trout.
This fish I caught as we approached evening. As you can see there is no shortage of black sand there.
This one was also 46 cm in girth and 74 cm in lenght. Caught this one on our final morning on a Dyrbitur streamer and a Jim Teeny T-300 line. That fish sure was a fighter!

April 2011. Spring sea trout. I suspect this one was on it's way back to sea having spent the winter in the river.

This fish was caught in April 2011 on a bright pink Nobbler. Why I chose a pink fly I don't know but it had started raining and the river was getting mudddy. Half way down the run at pool 7 I changed to this one and in the first cast this fish took my fly. Wether it was the fly or simply pure luck and position I don't know. 75 cm cock fish.
The first fish of our trip in April 2011. Don't remember how big it was but it was taken in pool 17.
Sorry about the picture quality but when you are in a rush to get the fish back in the water this happens. April 2011 - 82 cm fish took a Dyrbitur on a Teeny T-300 line.
