About the river

Fish on!!

Fish on!!

On the south west corner of Iceland flows one of Iceland's top salmon rivers, Laxa in Leirarsveit. The river is 14 km long and is fished withonly 7 rods at any given time leaving plenty of space to each angler. The river is perfect for fly fishing with light tackle and stalking salmon with smaller flies and surface hitch tubes. This kind of fishing is growing in popularity as it offers a new found excitement while salmon fishing. The river flows through a beautiful valley and the diversity of pools will make sure anglers get to experience something new every day.

Tackle

The river is normally fished with single handed rods, preferably 9ft 6-8wt. Small flies and the riffle hitch work very well as this kind of smaller river offers the angler a chance to do sight fishing for salmon and requires a stealthy approach.

Recommended flies can be seen here: http://icelandangling.com/what-flies-to-use-in-iceland/salmon-flies.html

Fish

On average the fish is about 3 kilos in weight with fish up to 8-10 kilos caught each year. The Laxa is perhaps better known for strong grilse runs rather then a high volume of MSW's. However for the past 5 years or so the size of fish seems to be increasing and the highest likelyhood of catching the bigger ones are early and late in the season.

Catch rates

Average catch rate in Laxa is over 1000 salmon per year. The 2009 season saw difficult conditions due to drought but still managed to total 1266 salmon. in 2010 the catch rates were 1175 and in 2011 only 907 which is only half of the rivers best.
