One of our packaged trips for the 2013 season was/is the "Two kinds of trout" trip. This trip is currently taking place and it is sold out but in a nutshell it is a trip where we are targeting sea trout and brown trout with 2 days on the Litla River and 2 days on the Huseyjarkvisl River. The sea trout fishing on Huseyjarkvisl has been slow so far in April with not many fish caught but some big ones to make up for that. It has generally been way too cold to make any progress.
Before I left Reykjavik to go on this trip as the guide I looked at the weather forecast and crossed my fingers. However the forecast was not playing ball and with a stunning -12°C forecasted I can't say I was looking forward to it. Now we have 2,5 days out of 4 on this trip finished already and I have some reporting to do. On the Litla River the weather was horrible. Freezing cold and wind. This morning was our last there and the tally at breakfast was 26 fish in 1,5 days. And some big brown trout among those. Today is when things started heating up. This morning one of the clients caught an 80 cm brown trout and fought it for 40 mins with tippet at 6 pound test. The same client also landed one at 75 cm, 60 and a 50 cm Arctic char. So a very good morning for him and we ended up with 34 fish landed in total on 3 rods for 2 days.
The 70 cm sea trout caught on Huseyjarkvisl this evening
We then arrived late at Huseyjarkvisl. We found fish quickly and a spanking fresh 70 cm sea trout was landed within the first two hours along with two smaller ones and a nice brown trout. It was on the last pool we intended to fish this evening that the biggest sea trout I have ever seen in my life was caught. Fishing a black Dyrbitur pattern with rubber legs on a Teeny T-300 line and a short leader Mr. Wessels from South-Africa made that perfect cast to pool 20 on the Huseyjarkvisl River. After that initial mend and those first few strips he felt the tug. Or maybe we should say he felt like he'd caught mother earth. I was fortunate enough to be standing next to him and could see that it was a big fish. Some minutes later the fish was landed and what a fish. A whopping 96 cm sea trout! A very heavy fish with 44 cm girth.
A 96 cm sea trout from Huseyjarkvisl. Biggest I've seen
Naturally the angler is one happy chap and in fact all three of them are with the fish they've caught on this trip so far. I hope to report more on this trip in the next days. I would like to remind you that there are 2 rods available for salmon/sea trout fishing on Huseyjarkvisl in late August as a part of a packaged trip called "All species combo".
