About the area The season in the Jokla river system starts the 1st of June every year. The river system consists of the main river Jokla, three of it’s tributaries, Kalda river, Fossa river and Laxa river and the fourth river that is very close by, the Fogruhlidara river.
![]() Nice salmon caught on the Jokla area The Fogruhlidara river is one of Iceland’s most consistent and excellent sea char rivers. The river’s char runs are in fact often at their best in June and early July. The fish then are mostly caught in an estuary lagoon which we are allowed to fish through the night if the tides call for it. Night fishing for sea char close to the thundering
The lodge The lodge is brand new with 6 double bedrooms each with it’s own bathroom, a very big kitchen, living room, tackle storage room and a fireplace. Built in 2007 the lodge is very well located close to Kalda river. The surroundings are very scenic with a spectacular view of snow capped mountain tops in the east and a birch grove behind the lodge. Average catch rates are around 500 fish mostly sea char.
![]() An Arctic char being landed in Fogruhlidara, one of the rivers on the Jokla area Catch rates On average the catch rates are around 500 trout and char and over 300 salmon. The sea char weighs from half a kilo to three kilos with the biggest ones caught in July. The brown trout in the rivers range from half a kilo to two kilos and the same for the sea trout. Average size of the salmon is about 5 pounds.
Flies For the brown trout normal trout patterns apply although on these rivers the fish eat alot of smaller fish so streamers work very well. Of course there are also insects and midges and caddis are most common. For sea char the best flies are white streamers with white marabou feathers and shrimp patterns, green, grey and orange. Tube flies work best for the salmon in the Jokla itself and Kalda river. The other rivers are smaller so smaller flies work better.
Tackle Anglers are advised to bring both double handed rods as well as their single hands to be able to adapt to different conditions. The Jokla is fished with a double hand and at times also the Kalda river. Other rivers are normally fished with a single handed rod.
