One of the big fish caught on the Breiddalsa this year The federation of river owners here in Iceland have issued the latest catch rates from the 25 rivers with the highest catch rates in Iceland. So let's have a look at how "our" salmon rivers have been doing so far.
The first one in the alphabet is the Breiddalsa river. It's been having a great start of the season with a lot of big salmon caught and the total tally is up to 194 salmon. Next is the Hrutafjardara river and there the tally is up to 90 salmon. Next up is the Laxa in Leirarsveit river and it is topping the chart for our rivers so far. The total salmon tally there is up to 434 salmon and counting. Hopefully we'll be able to report on the catch rates of the Huseyjarkvisl and both the Vatnsa and Skoga rivers. The Jokla area has reached about 50 salmon so far but that area is usually a late bloomer and so prime time is just around the corner.
Contact us for details and prices on the open spots we have for salmon fishing in Iceland.

Breathtaking scenery of the mountains It's been too long since our last news bit hit the website and all we can do is blame that on our busy schedule these days. We've had guests all over both salmon fishing and brown trout fishing. On the Minnivallalaekur both Guy and Dorian from England got their biggest trout but the action and build up to those fish was something out of a fairy tale.
Our guests fishing for salmon in the East Ranga River were hit with rain the day before their arrival and also on their first day. They still managed to catch well over 20 salmon in three days so they were very happy.
Mike from London went to the mountains with me and had "the best day of fishing" he's ever had. And that is a direct quote! We had fantastic weather and were lucky enough to have an ongoing caddis hatch from noon till about 6 pm during which we caught 27 fish up to four pounds in size. We were getting them on streamers, emergers, nymphs and dry flies but for the most part we got fish on the dries. The scenery up there is absolutely stunning and with a nice sunny day like we had you can see for miles and the view of the glaciers in the red midnight sun in breathtaking. Add to that wild, strong and hard fighting brown trout and you have a recipe for a fantastic day of fishing. Talk about getting away from it all!!
Like I've mentioned before we are having the best salmon fishing season ever and it's not too late to join in the fun. The remaining permits for those salmon rivers are moving very quickly and we only have a few open spots left so act quickly.
The biggest fish of the Breiddalsa so far this year The Breiddalsa River is up to 172 salmon and of those 21 are over 80 cm long with the biggest one caught this year 106 cm - 25 pounds. I don't have the latest numbers for our other rivers but as of last week the Laxa in Leirarsveit River was up to 320 salmon on only six rods, the Hrutafjardara River was up to 69 salmon on only three rods so the going is good. I still have not heard any news from either the Vatnsa River nor the Skoga River. The last we heard of the Huseyjarkvisl river was last week and then we had 72 salmon caught on the three rods. It looks like we'll have a record year this year. The river is sold out for 2010 but there is no need to panic because we have already started booking for the 2011 season. We are putting together a great six day package for groups of three to fish the Huseyjarkvisl and Hruatafjardara river for three days each. Full board, guide and transport included. Contact us for details and to book the trip but act fast to secure the dates you desire for next year.

Tore André from Norway with his trophy fish We just received an e-mail from one of our clients that just got back home after staying four days fishing on The Minnivallalaekur river. One of the guys in the group caught a 3,1 kg brown trout and a 4 wheight rod, a size 18 dry fly with a 5X tippet. No wonder why he is so happy. These guys arrived in Iceland on Friday and I took them to Minni to show them around the river for half a day. After that they were on their own, staying in that fantastic lodge and fishing that fantastic river.
These guys thought ahead and made the booking for this spot on the Minni a year in advance and it really paid off since now the river is sold out for July and has been for most of May and June and now the next open spots are in late August. So plan ahead if you can and make those bookings well in advance to secure your spots on those popular rivers.

What an amazing start of the salmon season!! |

One of the first for the Breiddalsa river So far this year the start of the salmon season has been amazing. It seems the salmon has arrived earlier in the rivers all over the country and it seems the fish are bigger than ever. It appears that these past two years or so there have been very favourable conditions for the salmon at sea which is resulting in good fishing this year. On that note - two of our beloved salmon rivers were opened up for anglers just yesterday - The Breiddalsa river and The Hrutafjardara river. The force that controls the weather answered all anglers prayers yesterday and gave us heavy rain all over the country. The rain effected the fishing on the Breiddalsa in the afternoon but on the morning shift five salmon were landed and several lost. On the Hrutafjardara four fish were landed and also several lost but two of those landed were over 80 cm long.
A 97 cm salmon caught on the Huseyjarkvisl river this week Speaking of big fish. The fishing on The Huseyjarkvisl river has not been any different than the rest of the country - the fish are there early. So far this week there have been about 20 fish landed on the 2-3 rods. This beautiful 97 cm long fish you see on the right was caught this week and released back into the river after some photographing. We hope this is a sign of things to come and on the Huseyjarkvisl river there is a strict catch & release policy on all fish - both trout and salmon. The river is perfectly suited for fly fishing and so only fly fishing is allowed on that river.
In terms of availability we still have spots on the Breiddalsa river available including the luxury fishing lodge perfectly located on the banks of the river. As a last minute thing we do have open spots starting next Monday July 5. for three days of fishing until July 8. Packaged price for these three days including pick up at Keflavik airport, domestic flight to Egilsstadir and transport to the lodge, all meals, accommodation, fishing permits and guide is $ 3.200.- per person. There are 4 spots available. Contact us for booking and further details.
Both the Hrutafjardara and Huseyjarkvisl are sold out for 2010. We have already started booking for the 2011 season so if you have any interest in fishing those rivers or simply want to express and interest please send us an e-mail or give us a call. Contact info at the bottom.
