About the river

On the south west corner of Iceland flows one of Iceland's top salmon rivers, Laxa in Leirarsveit. The river is 14 km long and is fished with only 7 rods at any given time leaving plenty of space to each angler. The river's catch rates have been steadily increasing and in 2008 there were 1600 salmon caught. With an average of over 200 salmon per rod Laxa in Leirarsveit is one of Iceland's top ten salmon rivers.

Tackle

The river is normally fished with single handed rods in sizes 7-9. Small flies and the riffle hitch work very well.

 

Fish

On average the fish is about 3 kilos in weight with fish up to 10 kilos caught each year.

 

Catch rates

Average catch rate in Laxa is over 1000 salmon per year. The 2009 season saw difficult conditions due to drought but still managed to total 1230 salmon.
