About the river

Huseyjarkvisl is really a very long river and it even has two names. It is called Huseyjarkvisl below the Reykjafoss waterfall where migrating trout and salmon can not go any further. Above the falls the river is called Svarta and that part is leased to a different company. The river is a tributary of a much larger glacial river called Heradsvotn. The river is a five rod river and is divided in two beats. The salmon beat is the top part of the river and it has two rods. The trout beat is the area from the lodge and all the way downstream to where the river meets the glacial river. This is a very long stretch of river with plenty of room for anglers. The trout beat is fished with three rods so each angler has plenty of space to himself.

Catch rates

In 2008 around 500 trout. Biggest sea trout was 9 kilos.

Tackle

The river is not very wide so two handed rods are not necessary but if preferred that is alright. Recommended are single handed rods weight #6- #9. Sometimes conditions call for sink tip lines and/or weighted flies so they should be brought.

Flies

Any sea trout patterns preferred is fine. Streamers and rubber legs work quite good and weighted streamers. Nobblers, Black ghost and some Icelandic flies work very well. Bring the flies you would like to use for sea trout.

The fish

The main target are the very big sea trout that migrate up river. However there is also a strong stock of resident brown trout in the river ranging from 1-3 kilos in size.

The lodge

Has three bedrooms, a kitchen, living room, bathroom and a hot tub on the back porch. The lodge is very close to the river so it is even possible to walk from the lodge to the top pools on the trout beat.
