About the river Breiddalsa river is an eight rod salmon river in the eastern part of Iceland. It’s name is derived from the valley it so majestically runs through, the valley of Breiddalur, which simply means broad valley. The valley is actually split right through the middle by a birch covered ridge to make it two smaller valleys within the broad one.
These two valleys have totally different scenery and landscape where the southern one, called Sudurdalur, or south valley, is broader and more flat. The northern valley, quite simply called north valley or Nordurdalur in Icelandic is narrower with majestic mountain peaks hovering over it reminding the viewer of the volcanic activity that has put its lasting mark on the landscape.
![]() Early run salmon - July Fishing is done in both these valleys in two different rivers that join together to meet the Atlantic ocean. In fact fishing is done in three rivers, the south river, the north river and the conjoined river, that each posess different qualities and each run through different landscapes.
The lodge The lodge offers luxury accommodation on the banks of the river itself. Eight double bedrooms, each with it’s own bathroom and shower. Satellite TV is available in each room as well as internet connection upon request. The lodge offers full board with excellent food made by the chef at Breiddalsa. The lodge also has both sauna and a hot tub on the back porch.
Catch rates On average there are about 800 salmon caught each year.
The fish ![]() Nice salmon caught in July The Breiddalsa is becoming famous in Iceland for the size of the salmon and the lease holder thanks the work done in their smolt releasing program. In 2009 there were 15 fish over 16 pounds caught with the biggest one 108 cm long, estimated about 27 pounds. Average size is over 6 pounds.
The flies Tube flies work very well. Also the hitch, Frances, Sun Ray shadow and other proven patterns.
Tackle Anglers are advised to bring both double handed rods as well as single hands, size #6-#9. Sink tip or full sink lines should be brought.
